Hans' Bar & Grill

Hans' Bar and Grill will open this Spring in Chelsea, consisting of an all-day restaurant with a 195 bins wine list. Hans’ Bar & Grill is named not for its head chef – Adam England, late of Le Pont de la Tour – but for Hans Sloane, the man who brought cocoa to Britain. So chocolate is very much on the menu at this airy, light 106-cover space tucked away on Pavilion Road, as well as eggs benedict, veal carpaccio and confit duck. It’s from the same team as Chewton Glen and 11 Cadogan Gardens.

Opening date: Spring 2018

The Duke of Richmond

Tom Oldroyd will open The Duke of Richmond pub in Hackney this Spring. The pub, first opened in 1841, will have a 30-cover dining room and the food will have a French accent. Bar food will include Toulouse sausages and mash and, in the restaurant, expect roast turbot and béarnaise, and open lasagne of wild nettles, violetta artichokes & broad beans.

Tony Conigliaro and Rob Roy Cameron will launch Gazelle, a dining-and-cocktail destination in an 1820s building in Albemarle Street later this year. It’s a departure for Conigliaro, he acknowledges, as the all-day site will be as much about food as drinks.

Opening date: May 2018

Founders: Tony Conigliaro and Rob Roy Cameron

Address: 48 Albermarle Street, London W1S 4DH

The Wolseley at Bicester Village

Bicester Village will be the location for Corbin & King’s very first site outside London later this spring. Although CODE is aware that the founders of The Wolseley et al have been keen to expand, the company has taken its time to find the right place for an all-day cafe (with food-to-go and a shop, we hear).

Opening date: Spring 2018

Founders: Chris Corbin & Jeremy King

Address:  50 Pingle Dr, Bicester OX26 6WD

One of team CODE remembers when the original Poon’s was in Chinatown and Covent Garden and has missed it since the 2003 closure. Now Amy, the daughter of the restaurants’ creator Bill Poon, is bringing the brand back. From 17 February, there will be a Poon’s pop-up in Clerkenwell, with a view to opening a permanent site later in the year. Dishes will be a modern, lighter take on classic Chinese and Bill is a consultant. Sounds like a new dynasty in the making.

Opening date: 17 February 2018

Founders: Amy and Bill Poon

Address:  131 - 133 Central Street, London EC1V 8AP

On Saturday 17 March, Tomos Parry, formerly of Kitty Fisher’s, will open his debut restaurant, BRAT, on Redchurch Street. Originally a colloquial term for ‘turbot’, BRAT draws on Tomos’ Welsh heritage and influence from the Basque region of Northern Spain, with a menu favouring seasonal British produce, cooked on an open fire wood grill. The wine list will be in collaboration with Keeling Andrew & Co, the new wine import company set up by the founders of Noble Rot.

Bookings for BRAT can be made from 12 noon on Monday 26th February by contacting

Opening date: 17 March 2018

Head Chef: Tomos Parry

Address: Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, E1 6JJ

Evelyn's Table

Ever since The Blue Posts reopened as part of the Palomar stable, CODE has been looking forward to hearing more about its basement dining space. As of midday today, bookings are open for the intimate 11-seater kitchen bar Evelyn’s Table - which will serve modern European food direct to diners at a marble counter from the chefs, led by Nacho Pinilla. The seats are bookable; meanwhile two tables will be held back for walk-ins.

Opening date: 8th Feb 2018

Founders: people behind The Palomar and The Barbary

Head Chef:  Nacho Pinilla

Address:  28 Rupert Street, London W1D 6DJ

Cora Pearl

The team behind Kitty Fisher’s have announced the name and location of their second restaurant. Cora Pearl, on Henrietta Street in Covent Garden, will open in spring and is named (like its sister restaurant) after a society courtesan. And rather like Kitty Fisher’s it’s a petite space over two floors, with 60 covers, and a kitchen to be led by George Barson (above), who’s been head chef at the original Shepherd Market restaurant for a year.

Opening date: Spring 2018

Founders: Tom Mullion, Tim Steel and Oliver Milburn

Head Chef: George Barson

Covers: 60

Address: 30 Henrietta Street, London WC2E 8NA

This spring will see the opening of a third Temper, from chef Neil Rankin and business partner Sam Lee. Of course the new branch, in Covent Garden, will feature Temper’s signature wood-fired oven and counter kitchen, but this time the focus is towards Italian dishes – with cured meat pizzas and game, goat and pork in the ragus (Cobble Lane Cured is hard at work producing meats for the launch). For the first time, Temper will be open for breakfast – expect bangers on the menu, and also adding a bang is a whole menu of vermouths.

Opening date: Spring 2018

Founders: Neil Rankin and Sam Lee

Address:  Mercers Walk, Covent Garden, London

Randy's Wing Bar

Must be the season… another temp gone permanent is Randy’s Wing Bar, but after their first site in Hackney two years ago, now the team are opening a second, this time in Aldgate. As the name suggests, Randy’s is all about chicken wings, and the new branch will offer boneless wings, salads and wraps to go for busy City workers, as well as with heaps of wings with a variety of sauces from truffled blue cheese to Korean in the 56-seater restaurant.

Opening date: Now open

Founders: Andy and Richard Randy

Address:  30 - 33 Minories, London EC3N 1DD

Opening mid-February in Mayfair is the first bricks-and-mortar site for baked good specialist Popina. Owner Isidora Popović has been supplying farmers’ markets across London since getting Prince’s Trust support in 1999 (CODE’s Queen’s Park resident has bought from the stall there many times) and has also sold biscuits to Harrods and Fortnum & Mason. Popina will be open all day, from breakfasts including kedgeree and pastries through hearty lunch stews to afternoon cakes, including some inspired by Popović’s Serbian heritage.

Opening date:  Mid February 2018

Founders: Isidora Popović

Address:  83 Duke Street, London W1K 5PF

Daddy Bao

Popular Peckham Taiwanese restaurant Mr Bao will later this month open a spin-off, Daddy Bao, in Tooting. The name is a reference to founder Frank Yeung’s father Joe, a restaurateur for 31 years who, he says, was instrumental in the success of the first site. The new restaurant will feature the same bao buns it’s already known for, plus smacked cucumber, golden kimchi and  pickles. The appetite for Taiwanese food in the capital doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

Opening date: February 2018

Founders: Frank Yeung

Address: 113 Mitcham Road, Tooting, London SW17 9PE

Big news for the White City Television Centre residential and retail development in west London. The latest restaurant to join the line up – which includes Homeslice, Patty & Bun and Bluebird – is a second site for Indian favourite Kricket. At 3,600 sq ft and 140 covers, it’ll be the biggest space yet for founders Will Bowlby and Rik Campbell, who will bring their modern dishes that are such a hit at the Soho branch (and before that in Pop Brixton) to a space that includes an open kitchen, cocktail bar and outdoor terrace. And the best news? This Kricket, which will open in summer, will take reservations.

Opening date: Summer 2018

Founders: Will Bowlby and Rik Campbell

Address:  Television Centre, 89 Wood Lane, W12 8FA

In March, one of London’s favourite ramen shops, Kanada-Ya, will launch its third site, this time on Upper Street. Praised for the rich stock that makes up the soups, this branch will add other dishes such as gyoza and a small but potent selection of cocktails. The 55-cover restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner – a good addition to the Islington food scene.

Opening date: March 2018

Founders: Kazuhiro Kanada, Tony Lam and Aaron Burgess-Smith

Covers: 55 seats

Address: 35 Upper Street, N1

39 Steps Coffee Haus

Named not for the Hitchcock movie, this bijou coffee shop references the number of processes from bean to cup when made properly. And proper coffee is what will be on offer at 39 Steps, with raw ingredients from named farmers and techniques to extract the very best flavours, when it opens in January. The attention to detail suggests London’s coffee competition is still growing; meanwhile there are soups, salads, sandwiches and cakes on the menu to moderate all that caffeine.

Opening date: Now open

Founders: Jens Rettig

Address: 8 D’Arblay Street, Soho, London W1F 8DP

Other Side Fried

Peckham Levels, being billed as south-east London’s new “cultural destination”, is the location for street food favourite Other Side Fried’s next indoor site (well, as indoor as a multi-storey carpark can be). The O.S.F’s buttermilk chicken, dirty fries, smoked mash and fried celeriac are on offer now, one of seven operators who will open in the converted space. Peckham Levels will be open 12pm-11pm, seven days a week.

Opening date: Now open

Founders: Matt and Tommy

Address: 95a Rye Lane, Peckham, South-East London, SE15 4TG

Suitably for the Burning Night Group, its latest opening has a fiery theme. Smokin’, just launched in Leeds, is a barbecue restaurant in the American style (think low’n’slow cooked meat and fish dishes). The group is based in Leeds, which informed its choice of the city for Smokin’ – although given chief executive Allan Harper’s comment that he wants Leeds customers “to be the first to experience what we think is something special” suggests a roll-out.

Opening date: Now open

Head Chef: Allan Harper

Address: 1 South Parade, Leeds

Mee Market

In a week’s time, Linda Lee of On the Bab and Koba will open her latest venture, something of a bridge between her existing street food-influenced and high-end restaurants. Mee Market, on Archer Street, will be a ‘table and market’, so you can both eat in and buy food and goods to take away. The elegant space will act as another showcase for design expert Lee’s beloved Korean cuisine – from poké bar to hot soups and stews and an 18-seater area downstairs in the lifestyle store area.

Opening date: Now open

Restaurateur: Linda Lee

Covers: 18

Address: 9a Archer Street, London, W1D 7AX

City Road gets its flame on this week with the launch of Nuala, a first site for Niall Davidson (late of Chiltern Firehouse, St John Bread and Wine). The bistro will seat 75, with a curved concrete bar and open fireplace; chef Colin McSherry (Fat Duck, Dinner by Heston) will be putting clams, spider crab, steaks and suckling pig on the open fire, while Honey Spencer, previously at Noma Mexico, will choose the wines. There will be Irish music and the open fire staying lit late – sounds like cold-weather comfort, to be enjoyed with a bone marrow doughnut.

Opening date: Now open

Founders/directors: Niall Davidson

Covers: 75-seat

Address: 70-74 City Road, London EC1

Harry's Dolci

Knightsbridge is the location for a new restaurant from Caprice Holdings which despite the name, is not just for puddings (although we bet the tiramisu, panna cotta and gelato cannoli will be top notch). Situated on Basil Street, Harry’s Dolci is a spin-off from Harry’s Bar in Mayfair, itself based on the Venice original – and will be open all day from breakfast, with a menu of Italian classics, all served in a 1950s-inspired interior. Harry's Dolci is due to open on 6 December.

Opening date:6 December

Founders/directors: Richard Caring, Caprice Holdings

Address:  27 – 31 Basil Street, London SW3 1BB

The Coach Makers Arms

Cubitt House has a good array of independent pubs in smart corners of London, now joined by new opening The Coach Makers Arms on Marylebone Lane. We say new, the actual pub has been there for 140 years but has will now offer smart pub food in a 50-seater first-floor dining room as well as craft beers and more from a bar on each of the three floors. The Coach Makers Arms opens in early December, just in time for the area’s hangry Christmas shoppers.

Opening date: Now open

Executive Chef: Leigh Hartnett

Address: 88 Marylebone Lane, London W1U 2PY

CODE are fans of the new Japan Centre takeaway counter (supersized katsu curry always hits the spot), so the news that a huge Japanese food hall will open next March in Westfield London is most welcome. In fact, it will be the biggest in Europe, enough to sate the legions of shoppers who roam the Shepherds Bush site every day – 200 covers and open kitchens to watch the chefs at work, as well as ingredients to buy.

Opening date: March 2018

Covers: 200 seats

Address: Westfield London, Ariel Way, London W12 7GF

Will you do Kudu? A new restaurant in Peckham has the right pedigree to attract diners – it’s the work of Amy Corbin (daughter of Corbin & King’s Chris) and Patrick Williams, who worked at The Manor and Paradise Garage. Set to open in January, Kudu is named for a beast from South Africa, Williams’ home country, and the menu will also take its inspiration from there. Open for dinner during the week and brunch on weekends, expect savoury tart tatins, pigs’ head pasta and pot-cooked bread with flavoured butters.

Opening date: 12 January 2018

Founders/directors:  Amy Corbin and Patrick Williams

Address: 119 Queens Road, Peckham, London SE15 2EZ

EKTE Nordic Kitchen

Last call for openings in the Bloomberg Arcade! The stellar line up of the now-open centre is completed with EKTE Nordic Kitchen, a new Norwegian restaurant. It won’t open till April, but the 60-seater space sounds tailor-made for the City – swish Scandi sandwiches and pastries, and healthy lunch offerings. The man behind it, Danish-born restaurateur Soren Jessen, knows the market – he previously launched 1 Lombard Street.

Opening date: April 2018

Founders/directors: Soren Jesse

Covers: 60-seater space

Address: 2-8 Bloomberg Arcade, London EC4N 8AR

A Wong

The restaurant line-up at Bloomberg Arcade just keeps getting stronger with the news that A Wong will open there in spring next year. The hugely popular (and newly Michelin-starred) Victoria site has been open since 2012; the second branch will be more casual all-day dining, still along Andrew Wong’s modern classic Chinese ideas. Chef-patron Wong says “I’ve been considering the idea of somewhere we would be able to open all day for a while. When the opportunity for the Bloomberg Arcade came along, we knew it would be perfect.”.

Opening date: Spring 2018

Founders/directors: Chef-patron Andrew Wong

Address: Bloomberg Arcade, 3 Queen Victoria Street, City, London EC2R

CODE thought St James’s Market was full, but the news that Ramael Scully, late of Nopi, is opening his eponymous restaurant proves there’s room for one more, when it’s of this pedigree. As you’d expect from one of Yotam Ottolenghi’s head chefs - and trusted co-author – the food will be eclectic. In fact Scully’s heritage is Chinese, Indian, Balinese and Irish, so it’s no wonder he promises a larder of interesting spices, pickles and produce. We’ll have to wait until the new year for Scully to open.

Opening date:  Early 2018

Founders/directors: Ramael Scully

Address: 4 St James's Market St. James’s London SW1Y 4QU
